Louisville, Colorado, Elects Hazel The Cat As Pet Mayor

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Louisville, Colorado, has elected Hazel, a shorthair tabby cat, as its second-ever pet mayor. The election, which took place in April, saw Hazel triumph over nine other finalists with a humorous campaign centered on "knocking things off of platforms."

The initiative to elect a pet mayor was introduced by the Youth Advisory Board in 2023. The goal was to foster community engagement and joy following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Marshall Fire. Louisville spokesperson Grace Johnson explained that the idea was to bring the community together for something "joyful and fun post-COVID and post-Marshall Fire."

During her two-year term, Mayor Hazel plans to implement policies that reflect her feline nature, including "mandatory daily nap time." While Hazel's election is a lighthearted civic engagement effort, it has brought the community closer together, allowing residents to share photos of their pets and propose them as potential candidates.

Despite being a pet-friendly city, Boulder, Colorado, has no historical or future plans for a pet mayor. However, the campaign in Louisville stands as a testament to the city's commitment to fostering community spirit through innovative and fun initiatives.

The election of Hazel the cat as pet mayor has not only provided a source of joy for the residents of Louisville but also highlighted the importance of community engagement and the unique ways in which cities can bring their communities together.
